SAILING ON BOARD OF A REAL ORIGINAL THREE-MAST SHIP ACROSS THE OCEANS. A DREAM FOR SO MANY BUT A REALITY FOR VERY FEW.
It is Europe's oldest three-masted ship still at sea. A living legend from the past to sail across the Atlantic Ocean or the Mediterranean sea for what we are not shy to call, one of the most extraordinary life experiences one can dream off.
A once in a lifetime opportunity to go back in time and experience the feeling of the sailors and explorers from the past and see the wild beauty of the sea by day and by night.
Built at the end of the 19th century, the Belem made her maiden voyage as a cargo ship in 1896 transporting sugar from the West Indies, cocoa and coffee from Brazil and French Guinea to Nantes in France.
When arriving at Saint-Pierre in Martinique in May 1902, Captain Julien Chauvelon found that roadsteads were full of vessels. With no place to anchor the ship, the Captain angrily decided to anchor some miles further away off a beach. On 8 May 1902, the Belem escaped the eruption of Mount Pelée and the ship was safe.
This was just the beginning of the incredible destiny of this ship.
In 1914 Huge Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster bought the ship to transform it in a luxurious pleasure yacht allowing the Belem to escape WW1.
In 1922 she became the property of Sir Arthur Ernest Guinness who took the ship on a great cruise around the globe the following year.
Then, in 1951 she was sold to the Venezian count Vittorio Cini who kept it in Venice.
It was only in January 1979 that the Belem came back to France and after a full, long and costly restoration, she began a new career as a sailing training ship.
Today, for the first time since her prestigious owners sailed for the last time, you can become part of the legend of this unique historical vessel and sail across the seas on a private cruise while enjoying a one of a kind gastronomic experience under the stars.
